Poetic language

Poetic language: Imagery, rhythm & rhyme

LEARNING GOALS:
  • I can identify parts of a passage that portray imagery.
  • I can use descriptive language to invoke imagery in my writing.
  • I can identify rhythm & rhyme in writing and speech.
  • I can write sets of words that rhyme.
  • I can follow a rhyme scheme to create rhythm in my writing.
WAYS TO SUPPORT AT HOME:
  • Point out poetic language when reading or telling stories (when showing imagery, alliteracion, rhythm & rhyme).
  • Make sets of rhyming words together and try to find real rhyming words when doing word of the day.
  • Recognize rhyming schemes when reading poems or stories (Dr. Suess is great!).

Examples of imagery using the senses:
Sight: The sunset was the most gorgeous they’d ever seen; the clouds were edged with pink and gold.
Smell: After eating the curry, his breath reeked of garlic.
Taste: The familiar tang of his grandmother’s cranberry sauce reminded him of his youth.
Touch: The tree bark was rough against her skin.
Sound: The concert was so loud that her ears rang for days afterward.
