Oral Traditions

Critical Thinking Focus:
Students are expected to explain why people, events, or places are significant to various individuals and groups (significance).

Content Connection:
Students are expected to know aspects of life shared by and common to people and cultures.

Key Questions:
  1. Why are stories important to Indigenous Peoples?
  2. What values (beliefs) were/are significant for local First Peoples?
  3. Why do Elders play an important part in the lives of First Peoples?

Learning Goals:
  • describe how Indigenous people contributed to the development of Canada (e.g. with respect to food, transportation, exploration, the arts and technology);
  • identify contributions that Indigenous people made to pioneer settlements;
  • describe various plants used in food preparation (i.e. vegetables, fruits, spices, herbs);
  • demonstrate an awareness of Indigenous place names.
