My name is Kelsi Lesowski and I am the hybrid teacher at Craigflower Elementary (kids call me Ms. L or Ms. Lesowski). This will be my third full year teaching at Craigflower, and I spent some time working here before that. Last year I taught a grade 4/5 class, and a grade 1 class the year before that. I've also had other experience teaching grades 1-6. I know that this will be a very unique school year for your children. The hybrid model is a new learning option so will likely take some time to adjust to and perfect. I have lots of ideas and want to work with you and your children to ensure they and you are able to be successful this year. We are also fortunate to have a very experienced EA, Ryan, working in our classroom.
I met with several of you this week to go over expectations for students and families regarding this hybrid model of learning. You'll find that same information sheet attached to this email for your convenience and for those of you who were unable to meet with me. I encourage you to come to me with questions and concerns and I will do my best to address them.
Students will be receiving more intense learning during the 2 days they are at school. During this time I will be helping them learn the skills they need to in order to be successful with their learning during their time at home. Some tasks will be able to be completed by your child independently, but some will also require adult support. I will send suggestions for how to structure your day for home learning and recommended time to spend on each subject.
Communication between school and home will be key, and each student will have a folder that will contain information, worksheets, sheets for tracking home learning, home reading books, etc. that will go home with them after their 2 days of instruction, be used by them during their 3 days at home, then returned to school for me to check. We will also be using FreshGrade which will allow teacher, parent, and student to access assignments when at home and upload work that is done at home that can't necessarily be sent back to school (ie. art, science, exercise). Information and permissions for FreshGrade will be sent soon.
I'm working on getting a device (Chromebook) for each student to use when at school that they can also take home with them. This will allow time for me to help them navigate the online learning platforms and resources that they will need when at home, hopefully enabling them to be more independent with their learning. If your child has a Chromebook that they can bring back and forth to school, please let me know and I'll ensure our tech people don't assign them an extra device.
Food at school:
If your student wants to participate in the breakfast program they can still do so, and there will be a special table set up for them in the gym. Families are not able to enter the school at this time. When your child is finished breakfast they can wait in our designated pick-up/drop-off spot at the picnic tables under the trees. I suggest they bring a book or colouring or personal toy to use during this time as they won't be able to go on the playground with the other students to ensure their "bubble" stays small.
If your child wants to participate in the lunch program, a bagged lunch will be provided to them at 12pm each day. We will break for a snack at 12pm and they can finish their lunch at 1:00pm after dismissal.
We will have a snack before going out for a recess break after the rest of the school has had their time outside. Please send your child to school with a healthy snack and a full water bottle.
Cohort A will attend school 9:00am-1:00pm Monday and Tuesday. Cohort B will attend school 9:00am-1:00pm Wednesday and Thursday. Home learning will occur on the other days. Friday will include a virtual class meeting and individual meetings with students as needed to develop skills and help with home learning. Please be prompt with pick-up at 1:00pm as there will not be supervision available for your child beyond this time.
What to bring to school this week:
- School supplies (first day - no sharing this year)
- Water bottle
- Healthy snack(s)
Once we get started and have Chromebooks (laptops) assigned to each student, they will be expected to bring it back and forth from home and school as well as a communication folder with work for the days of home learning.
Please keep in mind that as families change their minds about what type of learning they feel most comfortable with for their children, things may need be shifted and changed, which will be done so with your child's health and safety and educational needs in mind. If you have any questions or concerns, please don't hesitate to contact me or the office. I can be reached through this email, or through text at 250-884-4259.
